Strut Your Mutt isn't your average dog walk. Hosted by Best Friends Animal Society, it's a huge festival with dog friendly events that raises money for a cause -- saving the lives of animals in shelters across America.
This charity walk is a lot of fun, but here's really why I'm participating. Every day, more than 9,000 dogs and cats are killed in America's shelters simply because they don't have safe places to call home. Each one could have been someone's furry buddy, if given a chance. That's why I'm joining thousands of fellow supporters in 14 festival cities and online to take part in this incredible fundraising event.
For over a decade, Posh Pets has been rescuing dogs and cats in NYC. The seed was planted when Linda Vetrano, our founder and president, first saved a senior chihuahua from NYC's municiapl high-kill shelter. Since then, Posh has gone on to rescue over 7000 homeless animals. Linda did not start out "cherry-picking" young highly adoptable dogs, and neither did I when I joined Posh in 2010. Like Linda, I began my Posh journey by fostering a little, old cranky chihuahua. Over the past 8 years, I've opened my heart and home to senior dogs and cats, young pit bulls, diabetic animals, a three-legged cat, puppy mill survivors and over a dozen bottle-baby kittens with their eyes still closed. We have always prided ourselves on rescuing those who need us most - the old, the injured, the rowdy youngsters who need some guidance and training.
In 2014, we took over a small municipal shelter in Long Beach, NY. I quit my corporate job of 9 years to help run our small shelter, transforming it from a mere holding place to a warm, loving temporary home for dogs and cats from Long Island, NYC and Thailand. Over the past four years, more than 400 dogs and 300 cats have been welcomed into our Long Beach Animal Shelter with open arms. Kitens from the Long Beach TNR program, pit bulls and cats saved from the euth list in NYC, heart-worm positive dogs from the South, frightened dogs rescued from puppy mills and the barbaric dog meat trade in Thailand - each cared for by our staff and voluteers as if they were our own. I'm participating in Strut Your Mutt to raise funds to continue our life-saving work.
I need your help to reach my goal. Can I count on your donation for this sponsored walk? It's tax-deductible for you, and the great thing is each participating animal welfare organization keeps all the money it raises (after transaction fees).
Together, we can Save Them All.
