Did you hear the recent unhappy story about Ruby? Sadly, these stories are all too common in communities with breed-discriminatory laws, and they provide plenty of reasons why we all should not tolerate it in our city.

We all want a safe and humane community for people and our pets. Unfortunately, laws like the one that broke up this loving family do nothing to achieve this goal. Plus, they’re totally ineffective at keeping us safe, and they cost taxpayers a ton of money to maintain and enforce. It’s clear that it’s time to make a change to our dog laws.

Please take a moment to contact your elected officials and tell them that the current breed-discriminatory law is unacceptable and it must be changed. But don’t stop there, please share this message with your family and friends in Poplar Bluff on Facebook, Twitter and all the other social platforms you use. The more that people take action today, the better our chances will be to save family pets like Ruby.

As a Poplar Bluff resident and voter, I am appalled by the recent story of Ruby, the innocent family dog who was torn from her family. It's time to update our dog laws to protect pets like Ruby and all the responsible dog owners in our community.

I share your concerns about making sure that Poplar Bluff is a safe and humane community for people and pets. Unfortunately, the current breed-discriminatory law isn't doing anything to reach our shared goal. What the archaic law does is separate loving families from their innocent pets, a situation that is not only sad and unnecessary, but also is a huge infringement on our property rights.

These types of laws are also totally ineffective and they cost our community a huge sum of taxpayer dollars. That's money I'd rather see go toward our schools, our police and our animal control services.

That's why organizations like the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the American Bar Association (ABA), the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), the National Animal Care and Control Association (NACA) and the American Kennel Club (AKC) have all publicly repudiated these types of laws.

What they endorse, and what Poplar Bluff should adopt, is a comprehensive breed-neutral dog law that focuses on the behavior of both the dogs in our community and the reckless owners who cause so many of the problems. The trend in Missouri and across the country is to adopt this model and reject laws like the one we have on our books. It's time for us to join the countless other communities that have updated their dog laws and rejected breed discrimination.

Let's learn from the sad story of Ruby and her family, and let's start treating dogs like the individuals they are. Please update the dangerous dog ordinance today.
