It’s time to end breed discrimination in Lakewood.

Have you heard about Charlie, the beloved family dog recently torn from his family for allegedly looking like a “pit bull”? His story and the stories of all the other family pets taken from their loving homes is exactly why we need your voice. It’s past time for the city to repeal Lakewood’s breed discriminatory “pit bull or canary dog” ordinance.

We all share the same goal: a safe and humane Lakewood for people and pets. The problem is that the breed discriminatory “pit bull” ordinance is ineffective. It also violates the rights of responsible pet owners, and its enforcement costs our city tax dollars and could lead to lengthy litigation, as in the case of the Ohio cities of Reynoldsburg and Lima, where similar pit bull bans were struck down because they were in conflict with state law.

It’s time to take action and demand that elected officials repeal and replace this antiquated law. Urge your mayor and city council to repeal this discriminatory law and replace it with a breed neutral ordinance that focuses on the behavior of the dog and the behavior of the owner.
Thank you for being the voice for Charlie and all the dogs in Lakewood. Together, we are fighting breed discrimination to Save Them All.

Dear [Decision Maker],

As I'm sure you are aware, both the Third and Fifth District Court of Appeals of Ohio have held that "pit bull bans" are unenforceable because they are in conflict with Ohio's breed neutral dog law. It is time for Lakewood to follow suit and repeal this outdated ordinance before costly litigation ensues.

Please stand up for our community, and for the countless responsible dog owners who want to see our law changed. Repeal our antiquated breed discriminatory law.
