MO: Speak out against Springfield's new 'pit bull' ban

Best Friends Legislative Alert

Let’s tell Springfield what responsible Missourians think of breed discrimination.

By now you’ve probably heard the news that Springfield voted to enact a breed discriminatory “pit bull” ban that goes into effect January 1, 2018. Amazingly, the city went in this direction even though its elected officials were inundated with letters, tweets, emails and phone calls from residents opposed to the new law. It’s now up to all of us to send a loud and clear message that breed discrimination will not be tolerated — in Springfield or anywhere else in our state.

Council member Jan Fisk, who voted for the ban, acknowledged how unpopular the vote was, saying: "My voting record will reflect that I don't vote according to how it will affect my career, now and in the future, nor how it will affect my reputation. I don't respond to email bullying or intimidation."

Apparently, Fisk and her colleagues think that residents voicing their opinions on matters of life and death for their pet dogs is a form of “bullying” and “intimidation.” This flagrant disregard of taxpaying constituents is exactly why we’re calling on you today to send a loud and clear message to the “shameful five”— the four city council members and mayor who voted for the law.

Let’s show these folks exactly what responsible MIssourians think of breed discrimination. Let them know that our dangerous dog laws should focus on the behavior of individual dogs, regardless of breed or appearance, and the owners. They’ve ignored our voices until now, but if enough of us take action today, they won’t be able to ignore us when it comes time to re-examine this issue.

Don’t stop there. Amplify your voice by sharing this on Facebook, Twitter and your other social media platforms. The more of us that take action, the harder it will be for Springfield to keep ignoring the will of responsible dog lovers.

Thank you for speaking up. Together, we are fighting breed discrimination to Save Them All.

Dear [Decision Maker],

I was horrified to hear that you voted in favor of the new breed discriminatory "pit bull" ban in Springfield. As a Missourian and a dog lover, I can't tell you how disappointing and disrespectful your vote was to the countless responsible dog owners in your city -- the residents who overwhelmingly spoke out against the law.

Your vote in favor of this horrible law was a mistake. Please take action to repeal and replace this law with a breed-neutral dangerous dog ordinance. We need immediate action before families are torn apart and innocent family pets are killed. You can still be a positive vote for change in Springfield.

Sincerely,
