Community Cat Image Legislative Alert

Western Governors’ Association’s action puts cats at risk.

Today, you have the power to save the lives of cats right from your computer. Please take a moment to make an enormous difference.

The Western Governors’ Association (WGA) recently named “feral (or spay-neuter-release) cats” its No. 13-worst “terrestrial invasive species in the West.” This includes sterilized community cats, indoor-outdoor pet cats, barn cats, working cats (used to deter rodents), and the thousands of cats and kittens who begin life on the street before becoming beloved family pets.

We know there’s a better way to reduce the number of ownerless free-roaming cats through trap-neuter-vaccinate-return (TNVR).

The process is simple: Cats are caught (often by volunteers), evaluated by veterinarians, vaccinated, spayed or neutered and returned to their original outdoor homes unable to have kittens. TNVR just makes sense. It’s an animal-friendly alternative for reducing community cat populations. It also protects public health and saves taxpayers money.

Classifying cats as “invasive species,” at a steep cost to taxpayers, impedes the very programs that are essential to reducing community cat populations. Urge your Governor to reconsider and to remove cats from its “most wanted” list!

Politics is not a spectator sport, so please take action today by contacting your governor and urging him/her to ask the Western Governor’s Association to remove cats from its “invasive species” list.

Thank you! Together, we will Save Them All.

Dear [Decision Maker],

As a Colorado constituent, I was disappointed to learn that the Western Governors' Association (WGA), of which you are a member, recently named "feral (or spay-neuter-release) cats" its No. 13-worst "terrestrial invasive species in the West," with the help of Colorado's "invasive species coordinators."

Please, reconsider your actions and urge WGA to remove cats from their "invasive species" list.

Thank you for your consideration in this important matter.
