“I had no idea these [practices] existed and how I was affected by them.” - 2025 Action Team member Dear Friend, Earlier this month, we shared information with you about our campaign to end breed-restrictive insurance practices. While it’s an obstacle that our advocacy team is currently tackling nationwide, many people — even those involved in animal welfare — still don’t know it’s a problem at all. But word is spreading. Thanks to advocates like you, our state-specific petitions to end breed-restrictive insurance practices (available for all states except New York, Nevada, Pennsylvania, and Michigan) are gaining traction, collecting over 15,000 signatures nationwide! We’ll be hosting another 2025 Action Team training call on this topic soon, but in the meantime, we invite you to share your own story about finding (or not being able to find) pet-inclusive housing insurance. Have you been dropped by a provider, charged more based on your dog’s appearance, or had trouble renting a property due to the owner’s insurance company? Let us know. Your stories will help decision-makers see the human impact of breed-restrictive policies. And if you’ve already signed or shared a petition, thank you. It’s important for your state’s insurance commission to know you care, and for the insurance companies to know that consumers are watching. If you live in one of the states that already have laws prohibiting insurance companies from targeting owners based on their dog’s breed, you can still help by reporting violations to the state’s insurance commissioner.
