  • If you care for pets on a stray hold, pre-adoption helps you make sure you're not missing out on interested adopters during the holding period. You might assume that only small, highly desirable dogs get pre-adopted, and they do! But Memphis Animal Services started pre-adoptions in 2019 and found that most of the dogs getting pre-adopted were actually medium dogs over 6 months old - the exact population most in need at their shelter. Are you interested in starting pre-adoptions at your org? Here's a step-by-step how-to for getting started!

  • Community cats take the spotlight today in Andrea Sachs' The Washington Post article about a community cat named Kitty Snows who has divided a D.C. neighborhood. Best Friends' Chief Mission Officer Holly Sizemore offered some insight. "Community cats can be divisive," says Sizemore. "Many people see an animal living outside and their hero impulse kicks in. They want to rescue it from the cruel streets and pamper it. But community cat programs — which trap, neuter and release — are helping curtail the world’s overwhelmingly large feral cat population." • It’s National Adopt A Shelter Pet Day! Today is a day to celebrate the shelter pets you dedicate your lives to saving 🧡   Approximately 7 million homes in America plan to add a pet to their family this year. According to 2023 data collected by Best Friends, if just 6% more chose to adopt, we would close the lifesaving gap and save every at-risk pet in our nation's shelters.   But we have to welcome them in with open, inclusive adoption practices, or we risk them turning to other sources for their family pets. Learn more about removing common obstacles to adoption here: https://lnkd.in/ejWWz4zJ

  • The Brownsville Animal Regulation and Care Center (BARCC) in Texas saved 90% of the pets in their care for the first time ever in March 👏👏👏  That's an even more remarkable milestone when you consider that last March, their save rate was 37%. So how did they gain all that ground in a single year?   The BARCC team collaborated with Taylor Lefebvre from the Best Friends Embed Team to implement a number of changes, and one of those was removing roadblocks to adoption.   To start, they cut their four page adoption application down to only one page of absolutely necessary questions. Next they asked themselves why, in their border town with thousands of people crossing for work every day, they didn't allow adoptions to Mexican citizens. There was no real reason, so now BARCC does allow adoptions to Mexico. The lives saved from these changes (and more!) speak for themselves!   Learn more about how to try this out at your organization: https://lnkd.in/ejWWz4zJ
