Last Summer I took the opportunity of a lifetime to work for a NYC, foster based dog rescue known as Muddy Paws.
I was no more than 5 days on the job when I adopted my best friend Hayley after fostering her for 3 days. She was from an open-intake shelter in Texas, and along with her 7 littermates, made an extremely long journey to join the Muddy Paws Pack.
Hayley was a 3 month old, 26 lb black cur mix. She was the largest in her litter by a whoping 5 pounds, and I was the lucky foster who got to bring home the extra large puppy.
I didn't know it then, but saying "Yes" to fostering her changed my life.
To this date, Hayley has helped me save 14 lives. Hayley has been a playmate and confident young dog to our adult dog fosters. She's been a big mama and a gentle giant to our puppies. Most recently, she was a protector to a single kitten she felt very responsible for, waking up with me and putting her head on my lap as I bottle fed. She would give the kitten a big wet kiss before I tucked him back asleep until the next feeding time.
Hayley and I have been doing what we do together since day one. As the brand new kid on the job with a new puppy, we were ready to conqueor (or rescue) anything.
It's been over a year and I am so proud to say I now run the foster department for MPR. I have a core volunteer team of 10 I wouldn't be able to do anything without. I have 6 coworkers who inspire me and teach me something new on the daily. I have Hayley who reminds me everyday why I wake up in the morning and get to work.
It's sad to think about the number of Hayley's out there who need each and every one of us. This year, I'm walking for them at Best Friend's 2019 Strut Your Mutt. All donations through this page will directly benefit Muddy Paw's lifesaving efforts, so we can save all the Hayley's we possibly can.
Join me and Hayley for the walk, or donate to my team, and together we can all save the lives of homeless pets.
