This year I celebrate 14 years working for Best Friends Animal Society and decided to do something BIG for the animals. I plan to participate in the Grand to Grand Ultra aka “the hardest race in the world” on 22-28 September.
The G2G is a 6 stage 7 day race across some of the most remote and inhospitable parts of America. It starts at the spectacular North Rim of the Grand Canyon, one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World, and ends at the Grand Staircase, one of the world's most iconic geological formations. Last year I suffered a disappointing setback which forced me to pull out of the Grand to Grand 2023... just seven weeks before the race, I broke my ankle and ended up in an orthotic boot. But I'm healed now and ready to lace up again!
And why am I doing this you may ask? Best Friends Animal Society is the leading animal welfare organization working to end the killing of dogs and cats in America's shelters by 2025. Founded forty years ago in 1984, Best Friends is a pioneer in the no-kill movement and has helped reduce the number of animals killed in shelters from an estimated 17 million a year to approximately 347,000 today. Best Friends runs lifesaving programs all across the country, as well as the nation's largest no-kill animal sanctuary in Utah and works collaboratively with a network of more than 3,600 shelters and rescues nationwide.
Finally, I will also be competing in memory of my heart dog, Angel, who crossed over to the Rainbow Bridge the week of the 2023 race after a long and courageous fight against Lymphoma. She was almost 17 years old and left a huge pawprint on my heart.
