I am supporting NorCal Boxer's Strut Your Mutt fundraiser in memory of my boxers, Walter, Tasha, Lucky, Daisy, and Bentley. I'm participating because there are countless more dogs like them who need and deserve a chance at a wonderful life, and because there are countless people whose lives can be improved by the love and companionship of a once-homeless dog.
NorCal Boxer Rescue is an organization very important to me not only because I have volunteered for them for the past 9 years (and my daughter is the team captain for this fundraiser), but because NCBR consistently demonstrates its understanding of and commitment to its role in the no-kill movement. Young, healthy, well-mannered, purebred dogs rarely need rescue. NCBR the prioritizes dogs who truly are the most vulnerable, knowing that those dogs - the old, the ill, the injured, and those needing behavioral intervention - are more costly to care for and are slower to adopt. These include dogs like my current foster, Petey, a senior who needed emergency rescue when he was suffering bloat while at the shelter. Bloat is the same medical emergency that killed my childhood Weimaraner, Willie, many years ago. Petey is a lively, sweet, playful big baby, but saving his life cost NCBR about 70 times his adoption fee. Resource-intensive dogs like Petey are as loving and as worthy of our love as any other.
Every gift, no matter how small, helps save dogs like Petey so that they can enjoy a life as fulfilling as Walter, Tasha, Lucky, Daisy, and Bentley did. Thank you for any gift you can share!
