*Sadly we lost our beloved Cooper this past year so for 2019 we will walk to honor his memory*
Nine years ago, after the passing of my first dog, I started participating in Strut Your Mutt in NYC as a tribute to her memory. I realized just how much ONE dog can change a life…and how that impact has a ripple effect on the family and world around it. Among other things, one of the greatest lessons that dogs teach us, is how to love unconditionally. Anyone who has ever loved a dog understands what I’m talking about. I often say ‘I grew up rich’ because I was blessed to grow up with a dog! A 4lb ball of fluff that crawled into our lives and changed our worlds forever. I watched her turn my anti-dog father into her biggest fan, as well as become his “favorite child”. I learned so many things…but most importantly I learned that pets ARE family…and deserve to be treated and loved as such.
As an avid dog lover and pet owner, participating in events such as Best Friends Strut Your Mutt has raised my awareness of the plight of so many homeless pets. I’ve learned that there are so many dogs (and cats) who COULD be wonderful, loving, life-long pets, but don’t have that opportunity. Actually it is estimated that there are 2,000 dogs and cats killed in America’s shelters EVERY DAY. Yes…that’s every DAY. And believe it or not, that includes young & healthy puppies, aging seniors who loved loyally for years, and EVERYTHING in between (including purebreds too).
After supporting various rescues over the years, I finally found a rescue I admired enough to commit to as a volunteer. In early 2013, Rescue Haven Foundation (originally named The Ferndog Rescue Foundation) began its foster program to help find loving, forever homes that these throwaway dogs so readily deserve. Working as part of this team for the last six years has been a powerful experience and I am very proud of our organization. Rescue Haven focuses on giving each and every dog we rescue all the tools and resources they need to find their forever home. Our commitment to each dog is for a lifetime, and our priority is focused on who or what is in the best interest of the dog. Helping these at-risk dogs is not easy, and it certainly doesn’t come cheap. Our medical fund is continually depleted because we often take difficult medical or behavioral cases that other rescues pass over. We are constantly in need of funds, and I have walked in Strut Your Mutt with Rescue Haven for the last six years in order to help raise these necessary funds so we can save more. As this year’s team captain I am bound and determined to reach our goal, as well as my personal goal, so we can continue to give these worthy dogs the chances they deserve.
I NEED your help!! Would you please consider making just a small donation in an effort to make a difference in the life of just one dog? If you have a dog – or ever had one – you know what a difference that ONE single dog can make! YOU can help get one dog out of the shelter, off the streets, or saved from euthanasia with every dollar we raise! As a Network Partner with Best Friends, we are so lucky that every dollar we raise goes directly to OUR Rescue Haven Foundation Medical Fund (less a small percentage for online transaction fees) and this, our largest fundraiser of the year, is vital to continuing our mission.
This cause means so much to me and I am so grateful for your help! Although rescue may be costly, its’ rewards are priceless, and by volunteering with RHF I am reminded of that with each dog who finds their home after coming to our rescue.
Thank you very much for visiting my page and taking the time to read this. Any and all support is greatly appreciated!!!
