Strut Your Mutt season is upon us & I hope you can make a contribution to my annual fundraiser to help rehome dogs. Any amount is a good amount. I’ll be tickled for any $acknowledgement of a cause that is very important to me.
Why do we need rescue organizations when there are city animal shelters? Shelters are overcrowded & animals can get put down just for lack of space. Then why not have more adoption events with waived or reduced shelter fees? My rescue Moe was part of an effort to clear the shelters before the 4th of July. Though there were a lot of people looking, the shelter employee who helped us said most pets would be returned. People who pick up a pet at these events are often not prepared for the responsibility, time & financial expense of caring for a pet. This is my 6th year fostering dogs & my 3rd year with Walk Me Home Rescue. I’m proud to be part of a group that doesn’t just want to get the dog another home but will do the due diligence to place dogs where they will be loved many years to come. Because we specialize in small dogs, we don’t adopt to people who would keep the dog outside. We believe in spay/neuter & don’t adopt to people who have unaltered dogs. One of my fosters was a little bitey. We had adoption requests by families with small children but decided that would not be a good fit. We do home inspections to make sure it is a safe environment. We require an adoption contract. And we follow up months after the adoption to make sure. It’s a lot of extra work, a lot of extra steps for an adopter but we are committed to the dog & are looking for adopters that will be committed.
I care about this. I’m hoping you do too.
