2020 Strut Your Mutt Day

Korean K9 Rescue

We’re excited to announce that Korean K9 Rescue will be participating in Strutt Your Mutt for the third year in a row. Our goal is to raise $10,000 this year and we believe we can reach it together!

Last year, we raised $23,000 with 78 alumni participants. Aside from regular operational expenses, our goals were to open an animal hospital in Korea, start our own spay/neuter campaign, and buy a reliable transport van in NYC for our pups. With the $23,000, we built our animal hospital that is almost ready to open and we purchased our transport van. Our spay/neuter campaign has been delayed due to the pandemic, but we’re still planning to make it happen!

Strut Your Mutt has been vital to our mission because it’s our most successful fundraiser. As an international dog rescue, we are based in Korea and the US as a 501(c)(3) dog rescue, we cover the costs of bringing these dogs from Korea as well as paying for food, vaccinations, vet appointments, and special surgeries prior to adoption. Under normal circumstances, we use flight volunteers to transport the dogs to NYC but there has been a lack of flight volunteers brought on by the pandemic. We’ve continued to operate by flying the dogs through cargo thanks to our wonderful supporters and donors that contributed to our two large fundraisers when we needed it most. Cargo shipping started out fairly priced in March, but the airlines increased their costs by nearly 40% just within two months. This has made cargo approximately four times more expensive than using a flight volunteer. We’ve adapted to the changes as best as possible and have temporarily increased our adoption fees in response, but we still need more help from our community. As a 501(c)(3), we rely on donations because the costs to run a non-profit rescue are expensive.

Although we can’t walk together as a group at Hudson River Park this year, we still plan to put something together virtually with our Korean K9 Rescue community. We’re calling on our community of volunteers, fosters, adopters, and supporters - all of whom have stood alongside us - to come out again and virtually support us. Together, we can save even more homeless dogs that depend on us!

ABOUT KOREAN K9 RESCUE

Korean K9 Rescue is a non-profit, No-Kill 501(c)(3) dog rescue organization located in New York City and South Korea.

Our facility in Bundang, South Korea houses dogs rescued from dog meat farms, high kill shelters, strays, and puppy mills. We provide hope to rescuers and activists whose dogs would otherwise have little chance of survival without adoption. The adoption rate in Korea is less than 15% but it is significantly higher in the United States where we bring most of the dogs for adoption. Over 1,200 dogs are rescued and successfully adopted through KK9R every year. At our Bundang facility, we practice safe quarantine, provide vaccinations, carry out health screenings, and enable rehabilitation with dedicated trainers for our dogs. The dogs develop a steady routine, build confidence, and gain trust with new situations before they are transported to NYC to find forever homes.

In NYC, we are a foster-based rescue. Our dogs are crate-trained, wear back-ups on their collars, and eat a healthy raw diet. We spare no expense on the well-being of our dogs and we do our best to meet each of their specific needs to set them up for their forever homes. This includes having a thorough adoption screening process, ensuring that adopters possess the proper dog supplies, requiring adopters to enroll in training, and being responsive to any questions that adopters have along the way.
