ShepHeroes®

Be a Hero for German Shepherds in Need

ShepHeroes® is a foster-based rescue with a deeply experienced team of volunteers focused on carefully placing German Shepherd Dogs into loving homes that match the dog's temperament, activity level, and needs.

The Covid-19 pandemic thrust us into a new normal.

While empty the shelters efforts mean many healthy dogs have been successfully adopted or placed in foster homes, the ones remaining have a high risk of euthanasia. We take in and care for these dogs that have extensive medical, training, and socialization needs. They require the typical spay/neuter, minor vetting for parasites, preventatives, quality food and supplements. But they also need emergency vet care and vet specialists. And experienced, loving foster homes to accelerate their healing in quiet, comfortable settings instead of a kennel run.

Although we prefer to care for 3-5 dogs simultaneously, in March 2020, we expanded our foster homes to host 12 quarantine buddies as we couldn't imagine the alternative.

Your financial help will replenish our funds and allow us to say yes to more shepherds whose expenses will be higher than the average healthy shepherd.

Our injured and sick shepherds are with us much longer and consume more food and supplements, preventatives, and other resources. But they also capture our hearts as their transformation is gratifying, and the final goodbye as they head to their forever homes has us hiding our happy tears behind big smiles and hugs.

Through June 30th of 2020, thirty-five shepherds benefited from caring donors like you and our amazing volunteers, with thirty shepherds now thriving in their adoptive homes. Meet a few of them:

Coop grew his coat after a severe flea infestation causing skin infections and received a month of board-n-train to overcome his severe anxiety around dogs and unfamiliar people. We are grateful for the funds to help Coop overcome the neglect of the first 5 months of his life. His forever family now receives compliments on his demeanor and training when he is out n about. We are proud of our success in turning around a young pup who was recommended for euthanasia due to the futility of working with him.

Kika turned into the shelter with a severe head tilt and wobbliness, came to us for the chance to be diagnosed and treated through a neurology consult. And to help settle her severe anxiety at the shelter. Diagnosed with peripheral vestibular disease, Kika's head tilt has become barely perceptible as her inner ear hair follicles repair and heal. She loves to play with the resident dogs and has learned to swim with a one-year-old shepherd's typical energy.

Oscar arrived with his skin infections, elephant skin, significant hair loss, and painful eyes. Treated by the dermatologist and operated on by the ophthalmologist for eyelids folding inward and irritating his eyes, Oscar has been growing his coat and recovering without complications. He has been the happiest three-year-old boy through all medicated baths, gobs of medicines, veterinary exams of all sorts, and even his surgery. Although the shelter said he was a shepherd, it was hard to tell Oscar's breed until the swelling subsided, and his hair grew in. We love him even if there may not be much of a shepherd in this boy.

Zara, bundled into the car during SIP empty the shelters, bled with every step as her nine-month-old skin oozed puss and cracked open for two weeks in her foster home. With a series of antibiotics, antifungals, medicated baths, her skin healed, turned black, and peach fuzz grew. We celebrated each and every vet visit confirming progress to her final appointment for her spay and the plush coat she rocks now. Her forever family saw her resilience and sweet temperament decided to take her home to complete her healing until she could be spayed to become their forever.
