On July 9th I was writing a Facebook post in memory of my sweet angel Elu who left my side 3 years prior. Elu joined me on past Strut Your Mutt walks and was one of the brightest lights in my life. She reminded me every day why I rescue. The second I was done posting her beautiful black-and-white face, a message popped up on my phone asking for Rescue Haven's help with a beautiful black-and-white dog. My heart stopped instantly as her face was so similar to Elu's. Once I realized it was another dog needing help, I vowed to help her no matter where she was. Did Elu send her to me? That question was simple to answer. The message said she was in Puerto Rico chained up, neglected, over bred, with a large ulcerated mammary tumor and gums as white as snow.
We immediately said yes without a plan, without any idea of what her needs were except she needed saving! We were contacted by a wonderful rescue group in Puerto Rico, Souls of Satos, and spoke with Vivian who is a strong advocate for the many street dogs she sees every day. They had taken in a ton of medical cases and needed help rescuing this girl. Immediately we said "Go get her!" and that's exactly what she did. Her rescuers named her Tiana, meaning Princess, and that is how she is will finally be treated. Her owners didn't care for her, they left her chained up allowing neighborhood dogs to repeatedly impregnate her over the course of many many years. They looked at her every day in their flithy yard and watched her suffer, never once freeing her from her confinement. Thank God for Vivian who knocked on their door and begged to let the rescue take her. The image of her walking away from the pathetic life she knew is burned in my brain.
This girl is in bad shape. Aside from the ulcerated mammary tumor, she is severely anemic with her blood levels dangerously low despite the transfusions we have done, all the supportive medical care, xrays, ultrasounds, medical testing, and multiple vet consultations. On top of this large tumor, all signs are pointing to leukemia. She may not have very long to live but we are going to give her a lifetime of love crammed into the remainder of her time on this earth. Our new friends at Souls of Satos will be spending time with her and started off with a day at the beach where she ate yummy food, posed for beautiful photographs, chased iguanas, and put her little feeties in the ocean.
We are small rescue and we keep it that way so we can give this type of quality care to every dog that we help. We are committed to her 100% and that is just our philosophy. So join me please in this fight to save as many lives as we can with good quality rescue work. Tiana has stolen our hearts despite never meeting her face to face but sometimes that is how rescue goes.
This year, I’m participating in Strut Your Mutt, a fundraising walk hosted by Best Friends that saves the lives of homeless pets right here in my community and all across the country.
Please support me by making a donation to my page. Your gift helps homeless pets and will support my organization, Rescue Haven Foundation! Every single penny we raise goes directly to dogs like Tiana.
This cause means so much to me and I am grateful for your help. Every day, about 2,000 dogs and cats are killed in America's shelters, simply because they don't have safe places to call home.
Together, we can reduce that number to zero. Thank you for your kind support.
